People who have recurrent or chronic sinusitis have usually tried several therapies and may be disappointed that the treatment attempts did not work.
Nebulizer therapy is one approach that has been used successfully to treat acute and chronic inflammation of the sinuses. Treatment involves the use of aerosols – a mixture of very fine droplets of air, water, salt and medications. The aerosol is then delivered where it is needed: to the sinuses. In many cases this can ease symptoms and improve quality of life.
The sinus cavities can be difficult to reach because they are closed cavities and no air flows through them. Pulsating or vibrating aerosols are able to reach the sinus cavities through the active principle illustrated to the left. The pulsation allows aerosols to deposit in the sinuses on the downside of the sine wave.
Non-pulsating aerosols are more likely to reach the nasal cavity and are often times used post sinus surgery when the sinus cavity openings are larger.
