Getting the Most from Treatment with Metered Dose Inhalers

Inhaled Therapy: Inhaled medications are the preferred method to treat respiratory conditions like asthma and COPD. Inhaled therapy delivers medication directly to the lungs; working faster and with less potential side effects than oral medication.

Inhaled medications are available in a number of delivery devices. The most common types are the metered dose inhaler (MDI), dry powder inhaler (DPI), and nebulizer. Each delivery system offers distinct advantages and disadvantages and each requires different inhalation techniques. The ability to use the device correctly is important; for the drug to be effective, it has to get into the lungs.
